A buyer’s guide

Steel, stone or
a German kitchen?

Steel and stone kitchens are often recommended for Indian homes: no swelling, no termites. Those worries are real. Here is what to check before you choose, and how a German modular kitchen answers the same worries.

Why steel and stone appeal

Fair points first.

A steel cabinet box does not swell when it gets wet, and termites cannot eat it. A stone cabinet does not swell either. If your last kitchen was carpenter-made plywood with raw edges, those are exactly the things that failed, and any kitchen you choose now has to answer them. The question is what else you take on with each material.

If you are considering steel

Check these 5 things.

1 · The grade, in writing
Kitchen steel ranges from grade 430 and 201/202 to 304 and 316. India’s stainless-steel association rates 430 and the low-nickel grades as unsuitable near the coast, where they rust; 304 can pit there, and 316 performs well. Ask for the grade on the quotation, and the mill certificate with its chemistry.
2 · Not the magnet test
A magnet does not tell you the grade: cold-formed 304 can attract a magnet. Only the certificate, or a lab analysis, does.
3 · The coast
Within about 5 kilometres of the sea, which covers much of Chennai, Mumbai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam, even 304 steel tends to develop brown “tea staining”, and chlorine-based cleaners make it worse.
4 · Dents, scratches and sound
Thin sheet dents from a knock, brushed steel shows every scratch and fingerprint, and steel doors and drawers can clang unless they are well damped.
5 · Where the colour comes from
Coloured steel kitchens are coated, laminated or glass-fronted. Powder coating chips and rusts first at sharp edges, so ask what the finish is and how a chip is repaired.
If you are considering stone

Check these 4 things.

1 · The weight
A 12 mm sintered-stone panel weighs about 30 kg per square metre, so wall cabinets, hinges and wall fixings carry far more than with wood-based cabinets. Ask how the wall units are fixed and how many hinges each door uses.
2 · Where it is cut
Stone is brittle at the edges. Cutting and fitting on site needs specialist tools and fitters, and chips and cracks during installation are a known risk. Ask which parts are finished in a factory and which are cut at your home.
3 · If an edge chips
Chipped stone can be repaired, but the repair usually stays visible. Ask how a chipped door or panel is replaced, and how long it takes.
4 · Heat and the warranty
Quartz-composite surfaces can be damaged by excessive heat, and their makers exclude it from their warranties. Ask which stone it is, and ask for the warranty document with its exclusions.
How a Häcker kitchen answers the same worries

Made in Germany.
Proven in Indian homes since 2004.

Water
Board edges sealed in the factory (PUResist), cabinets on adjustable legs behind a plinth, and a metal sink unit under the sink. Water-resistant, not water-proof: leaks still need prompt attention.
Termites
Cabinets stand off the floor. Treating walls and floors is a site job for the whole home, whatever the kitchen is made of.
Hygiene
Smooth, sealed melamine and lacquer surfaces, and tested low emissions: the Golden M of the German furniture quality association and the E05 emission standard.
Strength
16 mm melamine-faced carcass, 19 mm shelves on metal supports, wall units on concealed metal rails, and German drawer runners with soft-close, fitted at the factory.
Design
Lacquer, real-wood veneer, glass, ceramic and laminate fronts, and on Systemat any of 190 RAL and 2,000 NCS colours.
In writing
Delivery in 16 to 18 weeks, confirmed when you order, and a written warranty on the cabinetry (5+5 years on Systemat). Water damage is not covered.

Questions

Steel and stone,
answered.

Is a stainless steel kitchen better for Indian homes?

Steel does not swell and termites cannot eat it, which is why it appeals. But it is only as good as its grade: near the coast the cheaper grades rust and even grade 304 can stain or pit, and steel dents, scratches, shows fingerprints and can be noisy. A well-made German modular kitchen deals with the same worries — water, termites, hygiene — with sealed board edges, cabinets raised on legs behind a plinth, a metal sink unit and smooth, sealed surfaces, and offers far more finishes.

How do I check the grade of a steel kitchen?

Ask for the grade in writing on the quotation, and for the mill certificate with its chemical analysis. A magnet is not a reliable test: cold-formed grade 304 can attract a magnet, so it neither proves nor disproves the grade.

Are stone kitchens heavy?

Yes. A 12 mm sintered-stone panel weighs about 30 kg per square metre, many times more than a wood-based cabinet panel, so wall cabinets, hinges and wall fixings carry far more load. Ask how the wall units are fixed and how many hinges each door has.

Is a German modular kitchen water-proof?

No kitchen cabinet is water-proof. Häcker kitchens for India are water-resistant: the board edges are sealed (PUResist), the cabinets stand on adjustable legs behind a plinth, and the sink cabinet is a metal unit. Leaks and standing water still need prompt attention, and water damage is not covered by the Häcker warranty.

What about termites?

Termites come from walls and floors, and they attack door frames, skirting and wardrobes as well as kitchens. Treating the home against termites is a site job, whatever the kitchen is made of. Häcker cabinets stand off the floor on adjustable legs behind a plinth.
