A buyer’s guide

A kitchen for
a humid city.

In Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, a kitchen lives with moisture in the air for most of the year and sea air for part of it. Here is where kitchens fail in those cities, what to ask any maker before you buy, and how a Häcker kitchen is built for it.

The short version

Humidity does not attack
the board. It attacks the edge.

A wood-based kitchen board does not fail across its face. It fails where it is cut: at the edges, where a glued-on edge band lets moisture in, the board swells, and the laminate lifts. It fails at the floor line, where mopping water and the odd leak stand against the bottom of the cabinet. And it fails under the sink, the one cabinet that gets wet from the inside. Add salt air near the coast, which goes for every metal part, and you have the 4 places to look at, whatever the kitchen is made of.

The answer is not a particular material. Steel and stone do not swell, and they have their own problems in these cities: steel is only as good as its grade near the sea, and stone is heavy and chips at the edge. The answer is how the cabinet is made: edges sealed in the factory, cabinets off the floor, a metal unit under the sink, hardware that was fitted in a factory and not on your floor. And a written warranty you have read, exclusions included.

Where it fails

4 places,
in order of damage.

1 · The edges
Every board in a kitchen is cut, and every cut edge is a doorway for moisture. An edge band glued on at a workshop or on site has a glue seam; humid air and wiping water find it, and the board behind it swells. This is the single most common failure in Indian kitchens, and the one to ask about first.
2 · The floor line
A cabinet that stands on the floor stands in the water the floor gets: mopping, a washing-machine overflow, a monsoon leak. Cabinets on adjustable legs behind a removable plinth keep the board above it, and let you dry the floor underneath.
3 · The sink cabinet
It gets wet from the inside: a dripping trap, a loose connection, a wet dustbin. A wood-based sink cabinet is the first one to go in a humid home. A metal sink unit does not swell.
4 · The metal
Hinges, drawer runners, handles and the sink itself. Near the coast, salt air corrodes cheap plating and rusts the lower steel grades; even grade 304 stainless can stain within a few kilometres of the sea. Ask what the hardware is, where it was fitted, and what its finish is.

6 questions
before you order.

How are the edges sealed?
In a factory, with no glue seam, or with an edge band glued on at a workshop or on site? Ask to hold a sample and look at the edge.
Does the cabinet stand on the floor?
Or on legs behind a plinth that comes off? Ask what happens to the cabinet when the floor is mopped.
What is under the sink?
A wood-based cabinet, or a metal unit? Ask what happens to it when the trap drips for a week.
Where is the hardware fitted?
In a factory, with the cabinet, or on your floor? Ask what the hinges and runners are and what finish they carry.
Is it steel or stone?
Then ask for the steel grade in writing with its mill certificate, and for stone, how the wall units carry the weight and what happens when an edge chips. The details are in steel, stone or a German kitchen.
What does the warranty exclude?
Ask for the warranty document itself and read the exclusions. Water damage and swelling are commonly excluded, by Häcker too; what differs is how the kitchen is built so that it does not come to that.
How a Häcker kitchen is built for it

Water-resistant.
Not water-proof.

Edges
Sealed in the factory in Germany (PUResist): no glue seam for moisture to enter. Every studio has sealed-edge samples you can hold.
Floor line
Cabinets on adjustable legs behind a plinth. The board never stands in mopping water; the plinth comes off so the floor underneath can dry.
Sink
A metal sink unit under the sink, so the one cabinet that gets wet from the inside does not swell.
Hardware
Hinges and drawer runners fitted at the factory, with the cabinet, and shipped to India as finished units. German runners with soft-close; wall units on concealed metal rails.
Surfaces
16 mm melamine-faced carcass with 19 mm shelves on metal supports; smooth, sealed melamine and lacquer fronts that wipe clean; tested low emissions (the Golden M and the E05 standard).
Honestly
Water-resistant, not water-proof. A leak still needs prompt attention, and the written warranty (5+5 years on Systemat) does not cover water damage or swelling. Kitchens fitted in Kochi and Mumbai years ago are the proof; ask the studio to show you one.

At home

5 habits that keep
any kitchen dry.

Wipe the edges
Standing water on a worktop edge or the sink cabinet floor is what does the damage, not the air. Wipe it off the same evening.
Fix leaks the day you see them
A dripping trap for a week does more harm than a monsoon. The plinth comes off; look under the sink once a month.
Run the chimney
While you cook, and for a few minutes after. Steam from a pressure cooker is the most moisture a kitchen sees in a day.
Let the room air out
After washing up, leave the window or the kitchen door open for a while, especially in the monsoon.
Dry before you put away
Wet utensils in a closed drawer keep the inside of the cabinet damp. Drain first.

Questions

Humid cities,
answered.

Which kitchen material is best for a humid city like Mumbai or Kochi?

The material matters less than how the cabinet is made. Wood-based boards fail in humid cities at their edges, where moisture gets in, and at the floor line, where water stands. A cabinet with edges sealed in the factory, raised on legs behind a plinth, with a metal unit under the sink, lasts in Mumbai, Kochi or Chennai. Steel and stone do not swell, but steel is only as good as its grade near the coast and stone is heavy and chips. Whatever you choose, ask how the edges are sealed and what the warranty excludes.

What is PUResist?

Häcker’s factory edge sealing. The edges of every board are sealed in the factory with no glue seam for moisture to enter, which is where a site-glued edge band lets water in. Every Häcker studio has sealed-edge samples you can hold.

Are Häcker kitchens waterproof?

No kitchen made of wood-based board is water-proof, and Häcker does not claim it. Häcker kitchens are water-resistant: sealed edges, cabinets on legs behind a plinth, a metal sink unit. A leak still needs prompt attention, and water damage and swelling are not covered by the warranty.

Does humidity affect the hinges and drawer runners?

Metal parts near the sea are the second thing to check after the edges. Häcker cabinets leave the factory in Germany with their hinges and drawer runners already fitted; ask your studio to show you the hardware on a display and explain its finish. Salt air is also the reason to be careful with steel cabinets near the coast: the cheaper grades rust, and even grade 304 can stain.

What can I do at home to make a kitchen last in a humid climate?

Wipe standing water off worktop edges and the sink cabinet, fix a leak the day you notice it, run the chimney while you cook, and let the room air out after washing up. Do not store wet utensils in a closed drawer. These are the habits that keep any kitchen, in any material, out of trouble.

Which Häcker studio should I ask about a kitchen in a coastal city?

Häcker has studios in Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, each with kitchens that have been in homes in that city for years. Ask the studio to show you one fitted 10 years ago; that is the only humidity test that counts.
